Beck, Julie. (2016 January 5). When Are You Really An Adult? The Atlantic. Retrieved by: http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2016/01/when-are-you-really-an-adult/422487/

We read and discussed this article in class, and the whole time I could not stop thinking about how much it related to my project. Throughout this article, the author ponders the question of “When Are You Really An Adult?” She includes multiple quotes from individuals who reflect on their thoughts about being an adult. The Atlantic article is a great framework for the article I will be writing about style and adulthood.

Bradbury, Amanda. 20 Things Nobody Told You While Growing Up Lifehack. Retrieved by: http://www.lifehack.org/articles/communication/20-things-nobody-told-you-while-growing.html

This text outlines twenty things nobody told you about growing up. The author begins by recalling how she wished she had known these twenty things before she grew up. The first piece of advice she gives is “You’re going to spend a lot of time figuring stuff out.” She goes on to describe things ranging from personal finances, health, attitudes, relationships and more.

The text is formatted in a list style--Buzzfeed-esque. A specific piece of guidance is listed with a few sentences of explanation below. Throughout the list of twenty there is only one image to go along with a piece of advice. The author interjects her own experiences in the introduction and then during the rest of the article takes a stance that can be generalized to a larger audience. This piece will help me with my project by serving as a reference of challenges others face while growing up. I can draw on these experiences and apply them to my own challenges.

Freeland, Chrystia (2012 December 20). Coming of Age at a Sour Time The New York Times. Retrieved from: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/21/us/21iht-letter21.html?_r=0

This article was published December 22, 2012, right before Christmas. Throughout the text the author discusses how previous generations, like the babyboomers, were “enthusiastic consumers and producers” of an individualistic approach to life. In turn an era of individual opportunity, growth and choice emerged. However, the article goes on to explain how the current generation is not facing such promising opportunity. Due to the terrible economic and job climate of 2012, even with extreme effort and determination, today’s generations are struggling to find jobs and grow up.

The information presented is in article form, published in The New York Times. The New York Times is a reputable newspaper. The author begins and ends the article by relating it to the holidays and Christmas. Further, the author uses specific and factual information. She draws upon research and statistics. The article also compares the current generation with the baby boomer generation. Using this approach aids the readers in understanding how much the 2012 economic climate effects the current generation. The information in this article will give me a foundation as I write my own article. Although I may not pull evidence from this piece, it will be a good framework as I write my piece.

Lundberg, Christian. “A Rhetoric of Style, by Barry Brummett” Quarterly Journal of Speech. 95:2 (2009): 224-228. Web. 10 Feb 2016

This text was recommended to me by Shelley. Although it does not focus specifically on fashion style, it does touch upon other aspects of style. Further it looks at style in relation to popular culture. This article also focuses on the “special emphasis on the global nature of style”(224).  As I am writing my article, I will be able to reference this piece. Hopefully I will be able to incorporate some of this research into my piece.

Scanga, Michelle (2015 February 24). The Style Evolution of the World’s Biggest Fashion Bloggers. WhoWhatWear. Retrieved from: http://www.whowhatwear.com/top-fashion-blogs/slide10

Although there is not an abundance of text in this article, it highlights style evolutions of many popular bloggers. This article serves as a good example of current style evolution pieces on the internet now. For each blogger there is a photograph of them when they first began their blog and then a photograph of them currently. As I am compiling pictures for my timeline, I can look at this article for reference. Also, most of the before and after photographs are looks that are comparable. I definitely need to keep this in mind when choosing which photographs to highlight on my timeline.

Yaeger, Lynn (2016 January 22). The Wild, Irreverent Life of Joe Carstairs. Vogue. Retrieved from: http://www.vogue.com/13390568/joe-carstairs-auction-doyle/

Also published in Vogue, this article tells the story of Joe Carstairs. The author gives a brief, but compelling and moving history of Joe Carstair’s dynamic life. The tone throughout the article is conversational, but also persuasive and interesting. I hope to utilize the same sense of tone throughout my articles. While reading this article I am engaged and want to know more. The conclusion of the article mentions that now, 22 years after Joe’s death, some of her possessions are being auctioned off for charity. I will reference this article as I begin to write my own article.
